1. Who runs Manwe

Manwe is an independent product. For questions about this policy, contact hello@askmanwe.com. The data controller for personal data processed through Manwe is the Manwe team at that address.

2. Website

Website hosting: this website is hosted on Vercel. Vercel may process standard request data such as IP address, user agent, requested path, timestamp, and security metadata for delivery, security, caching, and operational logs.

Analytics: the website uses Google Analytics 4 from your first page view to understand which pages are useful, unless you opt out. A notice on your first visit tells you this and offers an opt-out. Google Analytics receives the pages you view, the page that referred you, approximate location derived from your IP address (Google Analytics 4 does not store IP addresses), device and browser details, and interactions such as Mac app download clicks. Google Analytics sets first-party cookies named _ga and _ga_<ID>, which can last up to two years.

No advertising: we don't use Google Analytics' advertising features, advertising cookies, or ad personalisation. Consent for advertising storage and ad personalisation is always set to denied.

Opting out: choose Opt out in the notice, or Cookie settings in the footer at any time. The website then stops loading Google Analytics and removes its cookies from this site. Google also offers a browser add-on that opts you out of Google Analytics everywhere.

3. The former web app

The earlier Manwe web app at app.askmanwe.com, with its accounts, subscriptions and hosted decision runs, closed on November 2, 2026. We have shut down its servers and are deleting its hosted data, including accounts, run records, generated artifacts and seed material, from the providers that held it. The Manwe team keeps an offline archive of that data, which is not used for anything. To have your records removed from it, write to hello@askmanwe.com.

4. Mac app

Local storage: the Mac app stores app data on your Mac under Application Support, including a local database, conversations, saved work, logs, downloaded model markers, and model-related files. Conversations and saved work can include your questions, generated answers and files, and text extracted from documents you add.

Worlds and memory: when you use Mac app features such as Worlds, memory review, What Manwe sees, Lifeline, watchpoints, or scenario playgrounds, related profile/world context, memory suggestions, drafts, promoted memory, relationship context, scenario assumptions, ignored-memory choices, forced outcomes, and outcome notes may be stored locally in the app database. Suggestions and drafts are review material; promoted memory is the context Manwe can use when the relevant worlds are selected.

Remembering and learning (0.9.9 and later): the Mac app can remember useful facts from your messages and learn preferences from your corrections and other interactions. Automatic remembering and learning are enabled by default and can be changed in Settings → Profile → Memory and learning. You can review, undo, or set aside remembered items. Learning signals, correction history, and the small on-device classifiers are stored locally. When a configured cloud model interprets your messages or corrections, the relevant content is sent to that provider as described under Cloud model runs below.

Keys and settings: API keys for configured providers are stored in macOS Keychain. Provider configuration, onboarding choices, and model settings may be stored in UserDefaults or local app files.

Network behavior: the Mac app does not include automatic crash reporting. In version 0.9.9 and later, optional basic usage reporting sends the limited events described below to TelemetryDeck. The app also makes network requests for Sparkle update checks, beta downloads through GitHub, model downloads through Hugging Face or model tooling, web or research queries used by research features, and cloud model or custom provider calls you configure.

Optional Mac usage reporting (0.9.9 and later): when Share basic usage is enabled, Manwe sends app opens, completed onboarding, navigation categories, conversation starts, and task outcomes to TelemetryDeck. Events include the app version/build, macOS version, a random session identifier, and an installation identifier derived from a random value. They do not include chats, prompts, answers, file contents or paths, names, credentials, or provider account identifiers. Manwe does not attach email addresses or an advertising identifier.

Your Mac reporting control: review Share basic usage during onboarding or change it later in Settings → Access & approvals. Reporting begins only after onboarding has recorded your choice. Turning it off cancels pending delivery, clears queued events, and removes the local random installation value. It does not retract events already delivered. The queue is held in memory, not saved to disk. See TelemetryDeck’s privacy information for how that service processes received data.

Cloud model runs: when you choose cloud CLI, direct API key, or custom provider modes, the content needed for that run can be sent to the selected provider. That can include your question, source material, extracted document text, intermediate prompts, generated responses, and model settings, under the provider's own terms and privacy practices.

5. Cookies and local storage

No other cookies: this website has no sign-in and sets no cookies apart from analytics.

Analytics cookies: the website sets Google Analytics cookies when you visit, as described in section 2. If you opt out, they are removed and not set again in that browser.

Local storage: this website stores only your analytics choice and the date you made it, under the key manwe-consent, so it doesn't ask again on every page.

6. Third parties involved

A small number of providers process limited data on our behalf or as independent providers you choose to use with Manwe:

  • Vercel, for hosting and delivering this website, its DNS, and operational logs.
  • Sanity, which stores the Insights articles and serves their images from its content delivery network.
  • Google Analytics (Google Ireland Limited and Google LLC), for website analytics, unless you opt out.
  • TelemetryDeck, for optional basic usage reporting from the Mac app, as described above.
  • GitHub, for beta DMG hosting, release management, and Sparkle appcast distribution.
  • Hugging Face and model tooling, for model downloads when you use local model features that require downloaded model files.
  • Model and research providers, such as Anthropic, OpenAI, Alibaba/DashScope, OpenAI-compatible custom providers, DuckDuckGo, and public research/data APIs used by the product or configured by you.
  • Google Workspace, for email when you write to us and when we respond.

We do not share your messages, documents or anything you send us with third parties for marketing, sale, or unrelated training by Manwe.

7. How we use data

We use data to operate and secure the website and the Mac app; understand which pages are useful when analytics is on; respond to email and support requests; understand basic Mac usage when its reporting setting is enabled; debug failures; prevent abuse; and improve the product. We do not sell personal data, run ad tracking, or profile users for advertising.

8. Your rights and deletion

Depending on where you live, you may have rights to access, correct, delete, export, object to processing, or withdraw consent where consent is the legal basis. To exercise those rights, write to hello@askmanwe.com and describe your request.

For the former web app, see section 3: we will remove your records from its offline archive on request.

For content stored locally by the Mac app, the data is already on your machine. You can delete local app data by removing the app's local storage under Application Support, local models, and related files, or by using product controls when available.

9. Retention

We keep operational records for as long as needed to run the website, meet legal obligations, prevent abuse and resolve disputes. Analytics data is kept for 14 months. Email correspondence is kept as long as needed to respond and maintain a record of the conversation, typically up to 24 months unless a longer period is required by law. Aggregate logs and analytics are kept for security, troubleshooting, and product understanding.

10. Children

Manwe is not intended for children under 16. Do not use Manwe or send us material on behalf of a child. If you believe a child has provided us with personal data, contact hello@askmanwe.com and we will delete it.

11. International transfers

Model providers, Mac usage reporting when enabled, infrastructure providers, and email may process data outside your country, including in the United States, the United Kingdom, the European Union, or other locations where those providers operate. We use the providers above to deliver the product and expect them to apply their own privacy, security, and transfer safeguards.

12. Security

We take reasonable measures to protect data we receive, including using established infrastructure providers, access controls, and Keychain storage for Mac API keys. No system is perfectly secure. Do not send material through Manwe or email that you would not want disclosed in the unlikely event of a breach.

13. Changes

We may update this policy as Manwe evolves. Substantive changes will be reflected by updating the date at the top of this page. Continued use of Manwe after an update means you accept the revised policy.
